Have you every thrown out a messy jar because it was such a pain to wash, or because of all the water involved in getting it clean? I fill it about 1/2 full of warm water, add a little dish soap, put the lid on, and shake well. Then I leave it on the counter and occasionally give it a good shake (over the course of the day) until all the gunk is loose.

I use my old jars to collect cooking grease that I will not reuse.
I have keep an empty coffee can under the sink for this. That was when they were metal! Now I use a jar as well.
